Indeterminate Structures & The Moment Distribution Method

Go Beyond Simple Statically Determinate Structures Almost all real world civil engineering structures of any significance are indeterminate meaning we can't simply rely on the trusty equations of static equilibrium. The moment distribution method is one of the most intuitive ways to analyse these structures. After completing this course you will be well equipped to determine the shear force diagram, bending moment diagram and qualitative deflected shape for any statically determinate or indeterminate structure you're likely to encounter as a civil engineer. Having a fast hand-analysis method for indeterminate structures is invaluable for any good engineer! The analysis of indeterminate structures is all too often left to the computer in civil engineering these days. But as an engineer, if you can't approximate by hand what the computer is telling - you're on thin ice! By the end of this course you'll have given yourself an invaluable skill - the ability to make sensible judgements on a computer analyses! Section 1: Establishing the fundamentals I will start by setting out the fundamental parts of the moment distribution method; explaining each element before using some worked examples to tie them all together. After completing this section you will have a clear analysis procedure to employ. Each worked example concludes with development of a complete shear force and bending moment diagram. Section 2: Understanding the importance of structural stability One of the main areas of application for the moment distribution method is the analysis of structural frames. However, before we can start analysing frames, we first need an understanding of structural stability. In this section I will outline some of the common methods employed by civil engineers to ensure l

Truss Analysis in 7 Easy Steps

Truss Analysis is one of the most important topics in Statics, which is the first introductory in structural engineering curriculums. Trusses are structures that are widely used in civil engineering applications, such as bridges, steel buildings and roof structures. Trusses also appear in many mechanical and aerospace structures such as cranes, space structures, offshore platforms, and so on. What is a Truss? A truss is a structure usually consisting of straight members that are connected to each other at the two ends of each member. All members of a truss structure are connected together with pin joints, such that for the purpose of the design of these structures we assume the joints cannot carry or resist any moments. All external loads acting on a truss are assumed to be acting only at the joints, and therefore, all members of a truss are two-force members. Why Must We Learn Truss Analysis? First of all, if we plan to design and build a truss structure, such as a roof structure for carrying external loads, we need to find out how much load is carried by each member of the truss. Secondly, in the case of an existing truss structure, we may need to replace one or a few members. In this case, we need to find the internal forces carried by those few members within the truss structure. In both instances, the objective is to figure out and decide whether the members can sustain the forces or not and what size members and what type of cross sections are required. Types of Truss Analysis There are two major methods of analysis for finding the internal forces in members of a truss; the Method of Joints, which is typically used for the case of creating a truss to handle external loads, and the Method of Sections, which is normally used

Master statistics & machine learning: intuition, math, code

Statistics and probability control your life. I don't just mean What YouTube's algorithm recommends you to watch next, and I don't just mean the chance of meeting your future significant other in class or at a bar. Human behavior, single-cell organisms, Earthquakes, the stock market, whether it will snow in the first week of December, and countless other phenomena are probabilistic and statistical. Even the very nature of the most fundamental deep structure of the universe is governed by probability and statistics. You need to understand statistics.Nearly all areas of human civilization are incorporating code and numerical computations. This means that many jobs and areas of study are based on applications of statistical and machine-learning techniques in programming languages like Python and MATLAB. This is often called 'data science' and is an increasingly important topic. Statistics and machine learning are also fundamental to artificial intelligence (AI) and business intelligence. If you want to make yourself a future-proof employee, employer, data scientist, or researcher in any technical field -- ranging from data scientist to engineering to research scientist to deep learning modeler -- you'll need to know statistics and machine-learning. And you'll need to know how to implement concepts like probability theory and confidence intervals, k-means clustering and PCA, Spearman correlation and logistic regression, in computer languages like Python or MATLAB.There are six reasons why you should take this course:This course covers everything you need to understand the fundamentals of statistics, machine learning, and data science, from bar plots to ANOVAs, regression to k-means, t-test to non-parametric permutation testing. After completing this course, you will be able to understand a wide range of statistical and machine-learning analyses, even specific advanced methods that aren't taught here.
